sustainability page - conscious connection

Conscious Connection is our brand commitment to help protect the planet through making positive changes to the way we do things.

We’re taking the necessary steps to contribute to a more sustainable future for all as we strive to minimise our impact on the environment. Season by season we are working hard to increase the number of products in our ranges to introduce more responsible materials; including organic, recycled and certified fabrics.

We’re working to embed responsibility into everything we do, from the design and sourcing of product through to delivery. Along with the wider fashion industry, we’re aiming to replace conventional materials and processes with more responsible and kinder ways of working.

Our transparency to you, our community, is the most important to us. We look forward to updating you on further progress and invite you to follow along.

RECYCLE. REUSE. RE-LOVE.

With the aim of reducing waste and limiting our environmental impact, we’ve worked hard to introduce more responsible materials, including organic, recycled and certified fabrics across our collections. We’re doing our bit to recycle, reuse and re-love.

With the aim of reducing the impact that textiles have on the world, our organic cotton t-shirts have been made with 100% organic cotton yarn, certified by the global organic textile standard. This organic cotton is grown in rain-fed areas without polluting pesticides, creating a better fabric for you and your environment.

A selection of styles from our collections contain a blend of recycled polyester. Using recycled polyester in our pieces reduces our reliance on raw and new materials by utilizing discarded plastic products, lessening the demand for oil extraction, and reducing carbon emissions. It is the same in composition as traditional polyester, but far kinder to the environment.

Our cruelty-free leather look products are crafted from polyurethane (PU). This retains the traditional look and feel of genuine leather. The base fabric of these pieces is recycled polyester. This reduces our reliance on raw and new materials by utilizing discarded plastic products, therefore our reducing carbon emissions.

PACKAGING

For product being shipped from the factories we use LDPE (low-density polyethylene) recycled plastic poly bags to deliver products into our warehouse. Within the cartons for finished goods we have reduced the amount of packaging materials with no plastic banding and no inner cartons being used anymore.

We use paper packaging for all our online orders and this is made in the UK and 100% recyclable. Our tissue paper used in online orders and in stores can also be recycled.

In our stores we use 100% recyclable paper carrier bags and our homeware carrier bags are made from 40% recycled content.

PAPER

We think before we print. Our recently installed office printers work from a cloud-based print solution with fob access, ensuring we only print what is needed.

Everyone has a part to play from stores to head office. We continued our partnership with First Mile recycling in 2023 and also partnered with Pulse Environmental in order to expand our recycling initiatives.

From paper recycling across our London head office in 2023, we saved a total of 38 trees and 67,000 litres of water.

OUR PARTNERS

We’re continuing to work closely to build and strengthen our long-term relationships with suppliers and conducting regular factory assessments. We continue to use third party manufacturing facilities around the world and we always ensure suppliers and regions are used where employment and environmental practices are of an acceptable standard. We require all our product suppliers to abide by guidelines contained in the Supplier Guide.

Our staff visit the factories we use for garment production on a regular basis and consider the environment and work practices during those visits. Our Supplier Guide and the employment standards required of our suppliers accord with industry standards including that employees should: be given a safe and healthy environment to work in; be given the right to free association; be paid a fair wage; not be forced or bonded labour; be of an appropriate age; and work only reasonable hours.

In advance of starting to work with us, all our new suppliers must sign up to work within our ethical standards. These are outlined in our Modern Slavery Statement.

CHARITY PARTNERSHIPS

Our commitment to reducing our impact on the environment doesn't stop with our products.

CHARITY PARTNERSHIPS

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2023, we partnered with the feminist organisation Young Women’s Trust, who are working to achieve economic justice for young women. We created a limited-edition selection of our best-selling Rhodes Popover shirts exclusively embroidered with four inspirational quotes; Girl Power, You’ve got this, No limits and Women can. We proudly donated 20% of revenue from all four limited edition embroidered shirts to Young Women’s Trust, to help their ongoing work in supporting young women.

As a part of our efforts to offset our carbon emissions and reduce our environmental impacts, we partnered with international non-profit organisation, WeForest. The charity works to conserve and restore the ecological integrity of forests and landscapes, raise awareness of biodiverse tree planting and support local communities.

As part of our ongoing Community Connection initiatives, we proudly donated 20% of the sale from selected styles from our SS22 t-shirt collection to WeForest and their programme in the Brazil Atlantic Forest, with a focus on their Tiete Forest project.

Over the last few years we have also ran other charity projects, including supporting Submit to Love Studios, home to a collective of artists who have survived a brain injury. To support their incredible work, we launched four uniquely designed French Connection X Submit to Love charity t-shirts featuring the work of three of their talented in-house artists. We donated 20% of the profits from all t-shirts to the charity, Headway East London, where the studio is based, to help their ongoing work in supporting brain injury survivors, their families and carers.

As part of our Community Connection initiatives during 2020, we also proudly donated 100% of the profits from our 'Community Connection' t-shirts to the Camden and Islington NSH Foundation Trust Charity (C&I) and their COVID-19 appeal. The incredible Charity played a central role in responding to this by supporting its service users and the dedicated NHS staff and volunteers who provide essential mental health care to residents of Camden and Islington during the unpredictable times of 2020.

Created by our in-house design teams and printed in London on our classic French Connection white tees we already had in the UK, these were a stylish way to show and support our NHS heroes.
