Can You Wear Red to a Wedding?

Author Sadie Ellis - 3 minute read

Weddings are special occasions, and selecting the right outfit can feel like a challenge. While most people know to avoid white, the question of whether red is an appropriate choice for a wedding can still leave you uncertain. Red is a bold and striking colour, and when chosen carefully, it can enhance the celebration without overshadowing the couple. Here’s what to consider before reaching for red for your next wedding invite.

Is Red Too Bold for a Wedding?

Red is undeniably eye-catching, which can sometimes make it seem like too bold of a choice for a wedding. At its heart, wedding guest etiquette is about celebrating the couple’s big day and not drawing attention away from them. If you’re attending a more formal or traditional wedding, it’s wise to be cautious with your colour choice. Bright, vibrant reds may detract from the couple, especially in wedding photos. However, if the dress code is more relaxed, red can be a fantastic option, especially if you style it appropriately for the occasion. Co-ords, which pair a red top and skirt or trousers, can offer a fresh, modern twist while still keeping things sophisticated.

When to Avoid Red

In certain cultures, red carries significant meaning. At Indian or Chinese weddings, for example, red is often reserved for the bride or wedding party, as it symbolises luck and prosperity. If you're attending a wedding of this kind, it’s best to avoid red, as it could clash with the couple’s attire. Even in Western weddings, red might not always be the best option. In more traditional settings, a vibrant red dress or co-ord might stand out too much in photographs, especially next to more neutral colours like white, grey or beige. If you're unsure, it’s safer to choose a softer colour to blend in seamlessly with the other guests.

How to Style Red for a Wedding

If you do decide to wear red, the key is to balance the boldness of the colour with a more understated overall look. For formal or evening weddings, consider deeper shades like burgundy, wine or crimson. These colours feel sophisticated and timeless, especially in luxurious fabrics like velvet or satin. Co-ords in these deeper shades can create a refined look, especially when paired with a structured blazer or sleek heels. For more casual or daytime weddings, brighter reds such as cherry or coral can work well, particularly if the outfit features a floral pattern or is made of lightweight fabric, like chiffon or organza.

When styling your red outfit, it’s important to keep accessories minimal. Opt for neutral accessories like a simple clutch and understated jewellery to complement the boldness of the dress or co-ord. Additionally, consider keeping your makeup natural to avoid overdoing it. If your red ensemble is a statement, a modest silhouette, such as an A-line skirt paired with a fitted top or a co-ord set with a more tailored cut, will keep things balanced.

Whether it’s a formal evening event or a laid-back afternoon affair, there’s a perfect red outfit for every wedding. Rich, dark reds like ruby and wine are ideal for black-tie celebrations, adding elegance without being overpowering. For more casual events or outdoor weddings, lighter reds or patterned co-ord sets can be refreshing and fun. The flexibility of co-ords, whether it's a matching red top and trousers or a skirt, makes them an excellent choice for mixing things up while still staying within the boundaries of wedding guest attire.

If you’re ever in doubt, opting for a more neutral or subdued tone might be the best option, but with careful styling, red can absolutely be a stunning choice for your wedding guest look.
