Can You Wear White To A Wedding?

Author Sadie Ellis - 2 minute read

Weddings are a time for celebration, but they can also bring the age-old dilemma of choosing the right outfit. Once you’ve sorted out travel arrangements, found the perfect gift and marked your calendar, the final question often remains: what should you wear? For many, the choice is clear, but one issue might still be a bit murky: can you wear white to a wedding?

While wedding dress codes can vary, there's a long-standing tradition: white is typically reserved for the bride. However, this guideline has become more flexible over time, making the lines a little blurrier. So, is wearing white acceptable, or is it best to steer clear of it?

The Tradition of White

In Western weddings, white is symbolic of the bride’s special day, and for that reason, guests are typically discouraged from wearing it. This tradition dates back to the 19th century and still holds for many couples today. Wearing white to a wedding is seen as a way of overshadowing the bride, making it important to be mindful of how your outfit may be perceived.

But is it ever acceptable to wear white? That’s where things get a little more flexible.

When is it Okay to Wear White?

In some cases, wearing white might be acceptable, but it all depends on the couple’s preferences. A growing number of brides have started to embrace white as a part of the wedding theme, even asking guests to wear white or all-white attire. If the couple has explicitly stated this on the invitation or wedding details, then it's encouraged to wear white.

However, if you haven’t received this direction, it’s safest to avoid white altogether. In fact, most wedding etiquette experts agree that even a white dress with a pattern or accent of white is better left in your wardrobe for another occasion. A touch of white on a dress, like a subtle thread or small design, can still be seen as too bridal. When in doubt, opt for a colour that will complement the wedding’s theme without drawing attention away from the bride.

What About White Accessories?

While a white dress might be off-limits, accessories are a different story. White shoes, bags, or jewellery can often add a fresh, elegant touch to your outfit without causing any concerns. Just be cautious not to overdo it with white accessories, as they can still give off the wrong impression, especially if they clash with the overall tone of the wedding.

Alternatives to White

If you're unsure about white, there are plenty of other elegant and stylish options to consider. Soft pastels, rich jewel tones and even metallics are great alternatives that allow you to stay stylish while respecting the bride’s big day. Floral prints, vibrant hues, and classic black are all excellent choices that are perfect for any wedding.

Choosing the right outfit for a wedding is all about respect and balance. While white is traditionally reserved for the bride, it's important to consider the couple’s wishes and the wedding style before deciding on your attire. When in doubt, it’s always a safe bet to select an outfit that’s both flattering and respectful, ensuring you look your best without stealing the spotlight.
