How to: Layer for Winter

Author Editor - 2 minute read
Winter’s knocking, and the cold temperatures needn’t be a reason to sacrifice style. Layering is the ultimate fashion hack for surviving the chill while looking effortlessly chic. Want to know how to layer clothes like a pro? We’ve got all the layering tips for winter that’ll have you mastering the art of cold-weather dressing in no time. Cosy, stylish and oh-so practical – let’s dive in.

 BASE LAYER

The first rule of winter layering is to start with a solid foundation. A thermal or lightweight base layer is essential for keeping you warm without adding bulk – think sleek long sleeve tops, fitted turtlenecks or even a soft base bodysuit. This should keep you snug whilst staying breathable, ensuring comfort no matter what the day, or night, has in store.

MID-LAYER

Next, bring in the mid-layers. Here’s where the fun really starts, with chunky knit sweaters, oversized cardigans or a snug knit dresses. The trick is to keep it cosy but lightweight enough to not be overpowering once your outer layer is added. Experiment with textures, from cable knits to ribbed details contrasting your smooth foundation layer. Mid-layers are also your chance to play with prints and colours, so go ahead and throw on that bright jumper you’ve been eyeing up. Winter doesn’t have to be all grey, and the hottest knitwear colour trends of 2024 are pastels, cobalt blues and contrasting monochromes.

TOP LAYER

Now for the pièce de résistance: the coat. Your outer layer needs to work as hard as it looks good. A wool coat for those crisp days exploring the city, a faux fur coat for evening ensembles, or a puffer coat for when the weather takes a turn for the Arctic. Don’t be afraid to go bold – a statement coat in a loud colour, bold pattern or hyper texture can transform your whole look. Besides the classic trench coat, this season is seeing the return of gilets, animal prints and, of course, the seasonal check.

FINISHING TOUCHES

No winter look is complete without the accessories – this is where the fun finishing touches come into play. Beanies, scarves, gloves? Yes, please. A chunky knit beanie adds instant cosy vibes to your commute, and nothing says ‘ready to brave the cold’ quite like an oversized scarf. Bonus points if you mix prints or go for an unexpected pop of colour. Vibrant hues of fuchsia and blue can brighten up a winter outfit, in stark contrast to the skies above you.

Mastering how to layer clothes is all about balancing function with style whilst mixing, matching and adding a little personality along the way during the winter months. Stay warm, stay stylish, and remember – when it comes to layering, there’s always room for one more!
