How to Wash Denim Jeans

Author Editor - 2 minute read

Denim jeans are a wardrobe staple, but caring for them properly ensures they last longer and keep their shape. Whether you're dealing with raw denim jeans or a pair of everyday favourites, these tips will help you clean jeans effectively while preserving their quality.

1. Turn Your Jeans Inside Out

Before you wash your jeans, turn them inside out. This step protects the outer fabric from wear during washing and keeps the colour from fading too quickly.

2. Zip and Button Up Everything

Fasten all zippers and buttons before a machine wash. This prevents your jeans from snagging on other clothing and helps them maintain their fit.

3. Separate Your Colours

Keep darker jeans and lighter denim apart when washing to avoid colour transfer. Always wash jeans separately from other clothing to protect both the jeans and the rest of your wardrobe.

4. Don’t Overload the Machine

Overloading your washing machine can leave jeans dirty and over-stressed. Make sure there’s enough space for the laundry detergent to circulate evenly, ensuring your jeans get the thorough clean they need.

5. Use a Mild Detergent

Choose a detergent that's gentle on fabrics and free from harsh chemicals. For raw denim jeans, a mild detergent can help preserve their unwashed, crisp look while still removing dirt.

6. Avoid Fabric Softeners

Fabric softeners can weaken denim fibres and leave a residue on the fabric. Instead, try using a small amount of baking soda in the wash to naturally soften and refresh your jeans.

7. Wash in Cold Water Only

Cold water is ideal for washing most jeans, as it minimises fading and prevents shrinkage. Hot water can compromise the fit and colour, particularly for darker jeans.

8. Choose the Gentlest Cycle

When it’s time for a machine wash, select the delicate cycle. This reduces agitation, keeping your jeans in better condition for longer.

More Things to Consider When Washing

New Denim

New denim can bleed excess dye in the first few washes. Always wash new jeans separately or with similar colours to avoid staining. Adding white vinegar to the rinse cycle can help set the dye.

White Denim

White jeans are best washed in cold water with a detergent formulated for whites. Avoid bleach, as it can weaken the fibres, and air dry them while they’re slightly damp to help maintain their shape.

Raw Denim

Raw denim jeans require special care to retain their unique texture. Spot clean wherever possible, but if a full wash is necessary, hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent. Always air dry, as heat can damage the fabric.

Black Denim

Black jeans can fade with frequent washing. Use a detergent designed for dark colours and wash them inside out in cold water to preserve their rich tone.

How to Dry Jeans

Avoid the tumble dryer, as high heat can cause shrinkage and damage. Instead, hang your jeans to air dry, ideally flat, to prevent stretching. For the best results, let them dry until they’re slightly damp, then smooth out wrinkles using body heat by wearing them for a short while.

More Denim Care Tips

Wash Less Often: Denim doesn’t need frequent washing. Unless your jeans are dirty, wearing them several times between washes is fine, as body heat helps them mould to your shape.

Spot Clean Stains: Instead of a full wash, tackle small stains with a damp cloth and mild soap.

Store Them Properly: Fold jeans neatly or hang them by the waistband to keep their shape.

By following these steps, you can extend the life of your jeans while keeping them fresh and stylish. Proper care ensures they’re ready to wear, whenever you need them!
