Spotlight On: Wardrobe Essentials for Everyday

Author Emily Pywell - 3 minute read

There’s a difference between having a wardrobe, and having one that actually works.

The kind where getting dressed doesn’t turn into a rethink halfway through, where outfits come together without too much back-and-forth - built around the same pieces you reach for on repeat.

If you’re wondering ‘what are wardrobe essentials?’, then you’re in the right place. From the t-shirts and shirts that start most outfits, to the denim, tailoring and layers that bring everything together, this is our guide to the styles that make getting dressed easier…

TEE-UP

It tends to start with the easiest option - something you don’t have to think too much about.

A good t-shirt, for one. Soft, well-cut, and reliable enough to sit under tailoring or carry an outfit on its own. The kind you end up buying more than once, just in slightly different versions - a classic white, something with a touch of colour, maybe a graphic or subtle detail.

It’s rarely the standout piece, but it’s often the one everything else is built around.

GETTING SHIRTY

For moments where a t-shirt doesn’t quite cut it, the shirt steps in.

Styles with a bit more structure, but still easy to wear. A button-down sharpens things without feeling too formal, which is ideal for workdays, while a popover leans more relaxed, sitting somewhere between dressed and off-duty.

Both do the same job, just in slightly different ways.

GOOD JEANS

Denim tends to handle most of the in-between.

Not quite dressed up, not entirely casual - just easy. Straight leg, wide leg, something a little more shapely - the silhouettes change, but the role stays the same.

It’s the pair you reach for on casual days, for spontaneous plans, and you’re safe in the knowledge that a well-fitting pair of jeans will never go out of style.

SKIRTING AROUND

Some days just call for something different.

A skirt does that without making things complicated. Midi lengths keep it easy, denim keeps it relaxed, and softer fabrics bring a bit more movement. It’s a small shift, but enough to change how the whole outfit feels.

WEAR THE TROUSERS

Tailored trousers tend to do more than they let on.

They bring structure, but in a way that feels wearable now - looser fits, softer fabrics, nothing too rigid. Paired back with something simple, they’re often enough to make an outfit feel more considered without needing anything else.

KNIT HAPPENS

Whether you’re layering for cooler months, to battle the summer office air-con, or for a sunset stroll on holiday, knitwear plays a practical part in your wardrobe year-round.

A cardigan thrown over a t-shirt, a jumper layered with a shirt, a knitted vest - it softens your look, adds texture, and makes everything feel slightly more complete. From neutral to vibrant colourways, plain to patterned or embellished, a soft knit is an undeniable staple.

IT'S A MATCH

And then there are the days where you don’t have time to put a new outfit together, which is where co-ords become your wardrobe’s best friend.

If you’re looking for an easy outfit for off-duty days, relaxed loungewear has your back. For something a little more polished, blazers or waistcoats with matching tailored trousers are ideal – our favourite go-to for when we’ve hit snooze one too many times.

Worn together, co-ords take out the guesswork. Worn separately, they stretch a bit further. Either way, they earn their place.

COLOURED IN

None of these staples really land without the right base.

Black, white, navy, and softer neutrals tend to carry most outfits - the shades that make everything easier to build around. From there, it’s about adding colour in a way that still feels wearable, whether that’s something bold or something more muted.

Nothing too strict, just enough to keep things interesting.

LAYERED UP

Usually, it’s the last thing you throw on that pulls it all together.

A jacket, something lightly structured, or an easy outer layer - nothing too heavy, just enough to give the outfit some shape. It’s a small addition, but it tends to make everything feel more intentional.

A wardrobe isn’t built overnight, and it doesn’t need to be.

It comes down to having the right pieces in rotation - the ones that work across everyday outfits, that don’t need rethinking, and that hold everything together without asking too much.Once those are in place, the rest tends to take care of itself.

There’ll always be something new to add, but these are the pieces that do most of the work. The ones you reach for without thinking, wear more than you realise, and rely on when everything else feels like too much effort.

And that’s usually when a wardrobe starts to feel like it’s actually working.
